I will focus more on esports!

My biggest problem in life is that there are too many things that I want to do. I am working on my PhD in Mathematics at the moment and that takes a lot of time. I am also running a student gym and I am casting the Swedish championship in SC2 and qualifiers for that. And of course I spend a lot of time playing StarCraft 2 and also some working out at the gym.

This was all looking good but as I got some more really interesting opportunities within esports I felt like there was no way for me to do it all. So something had to go. One thing was for sure, I did not want to cut the time I am playing because that is something I really love to do.

Right now I am working 70% of fulltime at the university, 20% of that is teaching (that is 14% of fulltime). So even tho I love teaching math that’s what I decided to let go off. Starting next year I will work only 56% of fulltime at the university and at that pace I am supposed to finish my PhD in about two years.

So what will I do with all of this extra time (lol)? First of all, the things I will do will be in swedish (sorry). As some of you might know I did some writing for Aftonbladet. I will also do more casting in swedish, starting next week with casting the finals of DreamHack Winter on Swedish TV! Yes, on real TV! There are more things to come for next year and I am very happy that I get the opportunity to work more within esports. I think it’s a very important thing at exactly this time because of how much esports is growing. For me personally I am very happy that I get to try all of these things.

SVT will have both an English and a Swedish stream on their web TV from Ro8. Only the finals will be on real TV and with Swedish casters. Some people following the scene prefer the English cast. However when it comes to the then new audience a lot of people requests Swedish cast so I think the combination will be perfect!

I will be casting together with Petter Sjöstrand. I will be more of the analytic caster and he play-by-play. I prefer this combination of casters and I think that it’s even more important when it comes to a new audience. I always prefer it tho. I think that Apollo together with day9 is the best duo. Watching is then very entertaining and you also get the analysis. Personally I prefer to watch replays and do the analysis myself before watching two analytical casters, but that might just be me :)

On another note, I also think that it is very important that there are not just guys working in this area but also some girls if we want esports to really grow. We don’t want esports to be for half of the population but for everyone! That is actually one of all of the reasons I do all the things I do. Let me take ESPORTSM, the Swedish championship, for example. Last season we had 0 female players in the studio. ZERO! This was for 8 qualifiers and a final in SC2, Fifa, Street Fighter and CS. And we had one female caster – me. I would love to see some more girls within the scene and I think it’s important. How to make it happen is a really tough question tho.

This saturday I will be casting the second qualifier to ESPORTSM season 3 and on sunday I will be playing in The University Star League. This time the competition is a lot harder and I think that ThorZaiN will take the win. I'll post links on facebook and twitter when it is time!

As always, thank you so much for the support! If you live in Sweden don’t forget to watch some StarCraft action on TV next weekend. Much love and do me a favor and smile <3

IeSF World Championship

Last weekend I went to Romania to play the first so called world championship where the StarCraft 2 tournament was for girls only. And I won!!! I also wrote history, being the first e-sports player to get doping tested at a tournament!

The tournament

In total 13 girls were playing in the tournament.

On the first day of the event we played the group stage. I didn’t know a lot about the players but from what I could see Akane was my biggest threat in the whole tournament and we played the first match so it felt a bit sad. I managed to win all my matches in my group and I was very happy about that. I felt a lot better going in to day 2. Tournament experience is really important to me since I never seem to be able to play my best when I’m playing at offline events. It’s good that I get opportunities to practice that.

I think a lot of people where surprised that Aphrodite didn’t do better and here is the reason. Aphrodite might be top 8 master on Kr. I doubt she has ever been close to GM tho. But doing ok on ladder is very different from doing well in tournaments. On ladder you can play one playstyle only and it will work because your opponent doesn’t know your style. But Aphrodite came to the tournament with one single build in ZvT, a mech build. She did well at the start but then when everyone knew what she was doing it didn’t work anymore. I hope she learns from this and starts to mix it up in the future because I think she is an important role model in the female scene. She was one of the female players I looked up to when I started playing. I got warned about her playing mech before the tournament and had some time to practice vs it and wasn’t too nervous about it after seeing her play. One thing about Aphrodite was really impressive tho. You should have seen her nails!!! I could never play with nails like that. For me it’s actually quite important to keep them short. Hers were long and had a lot of stuff on them! I say stuff because I am quite lost in the manicure world *n00b*.

The second day we played out the rest of the matches and the match I was most scared of was the finals. The reason being that I usually play bad when I play on stage and in front of people. In the first game I wanted to get an early advantage with a 9 pool since I expected Akane to go for hatch first. But that didn’t happen and I did some mistakes and got behind in the game. I continued doing mistakes but I still managed to win. After that I felt very confident that I would win the whole thing and I could relax and play better. At this point I felt better than I have ever done playing in front of people. It felt as if I could finally breathe :) The crowd was really amazing!

On the downside I felt that I didn’t really get to show my skill. ZvZs can be quite short and I would have loved to play some more vs terran since I practiced ZvT so much before the tournament! But I’m sure I will get my ass kicked soon by the boys :). In total (including the Swedish qualifiers) my score for the tournament was 20-0. It feels a bit sick to think of it and I can tell you that this gave me a lot of motivation to continue practicing and try to compete more. I would really like to be able to do well in mixed tournaments but I know it is very hard to compete with fulltime players when you can’t play as much. I will do my best!

The prize was a nice medal and about $1400 (the information is very unclear).

When I play I always get really cold hands. So what I do now is that I bring a USB heating blanket (it just so happens to be pink) to tournaments and it helps a lot. I also bring the nutella at all times (ofc). The crowd had a lot of fun about that… Everytime I ate my nutella the production decided to put me on the big screen… Well, at least I made some people laugh, that’s good right?

The doping test

The first thing that happened after the winners interview was that some guys came to me and wanted to make a doping test. And of course there was a guy with a camera in my face asking how it felt to make e-sports history since apparently this was the first time an e-sports player got tested at an e-sports event. So what I had to do was to pee when some girl was looking (ye, this didn’t feel strange at all…). Then I thought I was done. But NO. Then I had to play with my urine, but it in boxes and measure stuff, like really? And I had to do a lot of paper work, and this at a time when I wanted to celebrate and be with my friends. Oh well, I think the hope of this is that e-sports will be taken more serious and seen as a sport. I do however not think that doping is that big of a problem within esports but what do I know?

Romania and the after party

Before I went to Romania I got a lot of warnings from other players who played at DreamHack over there. It seemed a bit scary to be honest. When we got there we got the warning that girls should not take a cab themselves. But I didn’t have to since IeSF organized transfer between the hotel and the venue so it didn’t worry me too much. On Saturday there was an unfortunate incident. Long story short, one of the players got kidnapped and mugged. I’m really happy he is ok. But that made me even more skeptic…

After the prize ceremony they sent us with a bus to “the after party”. We got dropped off at a scary lane (in my eyes) where we saw a lot of broken windows and graffiti everywhere. Then we were told to go down in this basement where everyone was smoking inside. As you might know I really can’t stand smoke and so I didn’t want to go in. Then I basically had no choice but to stand outside waiting for the bus for four hours. It’s not like I could take a cab myself in Romania. I mean, I might be strong but I'm not very big :D Oh well, at that point I was a bit shaken up because of everything that happened and I was lucky that the others didn’t like the party either and  I left with a big group of people. Oh, and we were supposed to have a nice dinner at the after party but as every lunch and dinner before they got us pizza from Jerrys pizza. Talk about bad advertising. I will never eat from Jerrys pizza again :D

In general we were treated very well and were taken care of tho :) But the so called after party was a big fail imo.

Team Sweden

The Swedish A.V.A team did really well too and got third place. In total Sweden got second place after Korea, yeeeey.

The future

As I came back home I got sick, it was kinda expected since it happens to me quite often after travelling and this time I came from Romania so... But as soon as I get better I will go back to hard core practice and prepare for the university star league later this month. I have a lot of things going on within e-sports right now and I will let you know as soon as all papers are signed and everything is set.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for supporting me. I’m so happy that I have so many people around me spreading love within e-sports. And I’m so happy that my ex forced me to start playing and that there were some female cups a couple of years ago that made me want to compete and play even more. And thanks to everyone who helped me practice for this event, I think I learnt more the three days before the tournament than what I usually do in a month. I will try to practice more like I did then in the future! Thanks to IeSF for organizing and SESF for sending me. And thank you Millenium for all the support and help I get, and big thanks to my family for all the support you always give me. Just thank you to everyone, and please ~keep smiling~

10 things you (probably) didn’t know about MaddeLisk

Some people requested that I start writing more things about myself on my blog. Appearently some of you want to get to know me better. So here is a try :)

1. I used to have a company selling key rings made of old space rocket parts.

In High school I had a company named Aurora UF with two friends. We sold key rings made of old space rockets that we got from Esrange (a big rocket range and research center), and puzzles with the image of northern light. The company did really well and we won several prizes for the creativity, we even made the news on TV.

2. I started playing SC2 because of my ex.

Without any experience of computer games I was not the most understanding girlfriend when it came to him playing SC2. My ex basically forced me to try and then I couldn’t stop.

3. I don’t really like music.

I have never really liked music. I do listen to it sometimes but it kinda hurt my ears… Strange, right?

4. When I was 16 I moved away from home to study space technology.

I moved 1600 km away from my family for this. And it was a great experience. The school was located in Kiruna, faaaaaar north. It’s crazy cold up there (:

In Kiruna you do things like taking trips with a snowmobile.

5. I used to be a cheerleader.

It’s silly I know. I was cheering for Kirunas Hockey team for about a year together with 5 other girls with golden pom-poms.

I think it's enough to show a picture of our pom-poms :D

6. I’m in charge of a gym with about 250 members together with a group of friends.

You might have seen pictures/videos from there. It’s a really awesome gym with a great atmosphere and the best training partners!

7.  I have never colored my hair.

And I probably never will. Same goes for tattoos, piercings (except the two in my ears) and cosmetic operations.

8.  I used to be a gymnast.

I was practicing really really hard when I was younger but unfortunately I hurt my back quite bad and was unable to continue. Still hurts every day. But no big deal, you get used to it.

That is the reason I use this awesome chair when I play!

9. I like to do scrapbooking, make cards etc.

Before I started playing SC2 I did it really often. I still do it but not as much.

10. I like nutella!!!!!

Ok, MAYBE some of you knew that one already. Same goes for some of the other points (: I do however NOT like nutella on bread!

Much love and keep smiling <3

What I do at work

Have you ever seen The Big Bang Theory? If you havn't I can really recommend it. If you are wondering what I do at work it's basically illustrated by Raj and Sheldon in the video below.

I am working on my PHD in math and I spend most of the time doing research when I'm at work. I teach some too tho. Here is my board of today!

Currently using some rook theory. I love when I do math that is actually possible to illustrate.

I'm crazy busy with work atm. I have to (almost) finish up a paper since my coauthor is moving away. But in 10 days or so I will have more time for SC2 again!

<3<3<3  Play safe and smile!  <3<3<3

Living in a gaming house

Before I came to the house I had a picture of how it would be. That picture changed a lot. I expected a smaller and dirtier place haha. I also expected to be home sick. We only booked the trip there so that I could choose how long to stay after I got there. I turned out to stay as long as I could at that point. And I wasn’t home sick at all. I’m the kind of person who likes to be alone but I had my own room and it kinda felt like home so it was all good!

I made a post introducing the house two days ago, it can be found here: http://maddelisk.blogspot.se/2013/07/the-millenium-house.html. If you have any questions feel free to ask them and I'll try to answer!

A typical day at the house

On a typical day I woke up around 9, made breakfast (usually toast and some eggs, ham and cheese) and relaxed a little bit. Then it was time to play. I played A LOT when I was in the house. Usually 30-50 games per day, depending on if we had clan wars or something else. I laddered a lot but we also played some together, we watched games together and talked about them. During clan wars and important matches we were supporting and helping each other. I talked a lot with Diestar and Dayshi about the game and especially zvt. Too bad Goswser came to the house at my last day there. I would have loved to talk more to him. Out of the SC2 players me and Diestar played the most (ForGG wasn’t there, or I’m sure he would have been on that list too!). Adel played a lot too, but not only SC2 so it doesn’t count :D

Anyway, usually we went to the store to buy nutella and other stuff almost every day. We went out to eat maybe every second day, usually a few of us together. The other days we made food ourselves or heated up some ready-cooked food. Sometimes people working in the house made food for us. If I got to change one thing about the house I’d want someone to make food every day!

We had a person who bought food for us and we had the chance to tell if we wanted something special so it was still pretty good. The kitchen was big and everything needed to make a nice meal was there. We were just a bit too lazy and I wanted to spend more time on playing. We also had the roof where we had bbq a few times. I knew French people loved baguettes but they really do eat it with everything! And a lot of it! Some days the kitchen was a mess tho, we had a cleaning lady but she was not there every day. Luckily I had the nutella!

Usually I stopped playing around 10-11 pm. Almost every night some people in the house went out to party. I joined one time but I didn’t really like it. I stayed in a lot but we had a lot of fun in the house too. We drank wine and talked or played dancing games or watched streams. Wow the dancing games were pretty crazy. Some recordings were made, I’ll see if I can get hold of it! I usually don’t drink a lot of alcohol. I actually didn’t drink any alcohol this year before my trip to France :D

Workout

When I came to the house the workout part went well. We even went for a run which is something I don’t do too often. Our video maker made a video about a training session, if you didn’t see it already you can find it here http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x11gm1t_entrainement-intensif-chez-millenium_videogames#.UfAZ543Iatb. We ran quite far and the funny thing is that me and Spit (an employee of Millenium) made it back about half an hour before the others. They decided to start walking instead of running… guys…

But already after a few days I started slacking. It’s so easy to just keep playing and forget about everything else :)

Nutella

So how much nutella did I actually eat during the stay in the house? It was about 4 kg (that is about 0.2 kg per day). People keep asking why I prefer the small jars when the big ones are more cost efficient. The answer is simple. Who wants a dirty spoon? Actually they didn’t have any long spoons in the house so eating the last of the one big jar I bought was a mess!

I wasn't the only one in the house eating nutella. If you count a spoon a day as eating that is. One of the LoL guys even had his own jar! And I fed Diestar and Dayshi some :)

PXL Lan

I came to the house right after a conference in Paris, that is I didn’t play for a week. The day after I arrived we went to a lan event to play. Honestly the timing was really bad BUT I think playing at offline evets is really important to me. I need the experience to get rid of my nervousness. Anyways, it was a nice road trip and we had a nice time. I wish I did better tho, but that is the way I always feel :)

BOB

Bob needs his own section. Some of you might have seen the video I uploaded from one of the nights Bob was streaming. If not you can find it here https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151432520436841&set=vb.248149008586666&type=2&theater. If you don't speak french you might not know who Bob is but he is a famous streamer on Millenium TV. Bob is a bit loud to say the least. He is a really nice guy tho but sometimes the yelling is a bit annoying. He was working from the player area, just below where we were sleeping. But a few days after I came to the house he was moved to his own room! And after that we barely heard him. Funny thing tho; one night when he was streaming really late and with the window open Dayshi woke up. Not because he heard Bob but because he heard people outside yelling at Bob to shut up. Poor them :D

Being a girl in a gaming house

To be honest there is not a big difference between being a girl and a guy in a gaming house. It's all about playing anyway and we spend most of the time in front of the computers practicing.

Due to the cultural differences I felt like a princess tho. With the guys carrying my bags, opening doors etc. Like really, in France it was impossible to hold a door for a guy. They just refuse to walk before you anyway.

However I think as a girl you get a bit more attention and people might act a bit more… sweet. I don’t think Diestar braided any of the guys hair for example but what do I know?

Some people also seemed to be scared of me. Not sure if it was because I am a girl or because of my muscles, maybe a combination. I do hate smoke and to prevent the smoke from entering the house I put up a note on the door to the roof telling people to close it while smoking. And sometimes someone forgot and I obviously got crazy mad and they scared as little girls.

I wasn’t the only girl in a house, which was nice. A few others were there working with the webpage and marketing or visiting their boyfriends.

What else?

The Millenium house is different from many other team houses since there are so many people working there too. To me that was a really good thing. It makes communication easier and there are always people around you that can help if you have any issues, want to make a video, want some graphics, new t-shirts, ye basically anything.

When I played from the house I used two monitors but had some issues with one of them and right the second I told them they came with a brand new one. Or when I tried Diestars mouse mat and fell in love with it I asked to get one of my own and they made it happen right away. It was the Corsair MM600. And since I’m not obligated to use sponsor gear you can trust me on this one, it’s really good!

Like I stated earlier I stayed in a lot but we were out a few times. Taking walks, running, eating at nice places... But I came there to play, and that’s what I did.

I'd say Millenium is like a family. And I'm really happy to be a part of it. I wish I knew french tho, I'll try to learn some!

And last but not least I want to thank Millenium for giving me the opportunity to practice from the house. I hope I can come back soon! And thanks to everyone in the house for making my stay such a pleasure!

The Millenium house

As you might know I stayed at the Millenium house for a few weeks this summer. This blog post is just to introduce the house. In two days I will be back with another post about my experience in the house.

Entering the house

The first thing you should know is that Millenium is a lot more than a team. There are about 20 people working fulltime in the house every day, working with marketing, web TV, making videos, new for the webpage etc. And usually there are about 15 players staying there, not just StarCraft 2 but also CoD, LoL etc.

The house is located in Marseille, France.

The first floor

On the first floor there is a big office from where lots of people are working. There are also two studios for the web TV, laundry machine and a meeting room.

One of the studios.

The second floor

Here we find the player area. Note that we even have Millenium tables :)

Diestar, Dayshi and Goswser.

Diestar and Dayshi playing, LoL team in the background.

The big kitchen is also located on the second floor.

There is no chef in the house but sometimes there are nice people making food for us. Other days we make it alone or just eat outside. There are lots of restaurants close to the house.

From the kitchen you can reach the roof. It's really nice up there. We had bbq there a few times :)

This is where tournaments are held at the Millenium house. The picture is from the French Championship.
The second floor is not just for players tho. There are other people working from here too.

There is also a third studio on this floor, I never got a picture of it tho. And a sofa to relax/sleep in :D ONE time we used it to watch GSL together.

The house is full of Millenium stuff. We even have Millenium pillows :)
And a Millenium floor :) We use it for dancing games!

The third floor

The third floor is where most of the players are sleeping. But since we are so many Millenium also have an appartment really close for the rest of the players and streamers.

I decided not to take pictures from inside the rooms. I think you can guess why!

We also have a nice bathtub, some showers and a lot of toilets in the house (if that wasn't obvious).

I'll be back in two days to tell you about how it was to live in the house, how much we practiced and how we spent the time when we didn't practice.

<3 See you guys, and remember to keep smiling :) <3

DreamHack Summer 2013

Well what can I say. If you saw me there I was probably smiling and there was a good reason for that.

DreamHack was amazing. Ye that’s it, just amazing. So I decided to write a little bit about it. Havn't blogged in a while...

My games

I practiced so much zvz right before DreamHack and I changed my style just a few days before. After doing quite well the days before I left I felt like I could make it out of my group for sure.  I really tried but I did some mistakes that you can’t afford if you want to beat players like SortOf and Targa. Also, I expected Targa to allin but I didn’t expect that from SortOf at all so I got a bit surprised and caught off guard. I should just stop plaing the player and just playing the race.

I was also really nervous and my hands were shaking during my games vs SortOf. I really have to work on that. I think I just have to play more tournaments, both online and offline so I'll try to do that.

I got third in the group and I wasn’t happy at all with that. I sat down for quite some time and I even checked out some math slides to have something else to think of but the fact that I lost.

But then when I turned around I got to see this! A sign saying “We <3 MaddeLisk! The Queen of the North!” That meant a lot to me. Thank you Ludvig! I just love every single one of my friends, fans and followers. Thanks to everyone who supported me and came to talk to me during DreamHack!

After playing I didn’t have a lot of time to think. It was time to cast some games!

Casting

I was really busy at DreamHack, I wasn’t there just to play but also to cast esportsm, the Swedish championship.
Photo taken by Carl-Oscar-Aaro
Day one the last qualifier was played and StarNaN took the finals over Sjow 2-0. Day two we had the finals I think most people wanted to see with Naniwa vs ThorZaiN. ThorZain won the title last year and when Naniwa qualified he stated that the only reason he wanted to play was to beat ThorZaiN. The finals started with a 1 hour 20 minute game where ThorZaiN spooned his way to victory. Naniwa didn’t want to repeat that and decided to be aggressive and that worked out well for him. He won 3-1 and 75 000 SEK, that’s more than the prize for the winner of the big DreamHack Open tournament.

Coca-cola

You might have seen the coca-cola commercial I made a few days ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCSUqFXD4hk). I never expected it to get as many views or as many positive comments as it did. I’m just really happy that a big company such as coca-cola wants to do more for esports. During the last day of DreamHack I was sitting with my friends watching the games on the stage. And guess what commercial was running in the break! I thought I was going to die :D People turned around pointing at me and I tried to hide. Haha. I also got to share that coke with Apollo in probably the most awkward way^^

My team

It was really nice to meet my team again. They are all really supportive and I got to meet my manager for the first time. Like I said so many times already, I couldn’t be happier with my team. I’m looking forward to see some of them again in two weeks when I’m going to the gaming house in France for some hardcore practice!

Sjowtime!

The Show that should probably be referred to as “the Sjow” was something extra.
It was amazing to see the Swedish player Sjow doing so well and beating Life. The crowd went crazy during the really back and forth last and deciding game. Tears of happiness were so close. Nice to see both Sjow and the swedish team property doing well. I must say that I really like the production of DreamHack. They are always doing an amazing job!

Interviews

Photo taken by Jeroen weimar https://www.flickr.com/weiman
I also made a few interviews. You can find the one make by Hotbid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRMfnIJdIrE. I really like his interviews!
Millenium made one with me and Dayshi: http://www.millenium.org/starcraft-2/accueil/video/interview-de-dayshi-et-maddelisk-interview-de-dayshi-et-maddelisk-a-la-dreamhack-summer-2013-lors-de-la-deuxieme-journee-88081 (some parts in english and some in french). Kerrigan morph

As some of you know the winner of UNISL won a painting of him/herself morphed with a starcraft carracter. I am very happy about the prize and here is the result of me morphed with Kerrigan.

Painter: Hannes Berg
Thank you Hannes and everyone at UNISL for making this such an amazing memory. For more paintings by Hannes, check out http://hannesberg.tumblr.com/.

" I had the honour and pleasure of working with MaddeLisk who is just as easy going as she seems on the casts. And she's really got an attention to detail. One of the biggest reasons why this one turned out the way it did. This painting is one of them i'm most proud / fond of. " ~Hannes Berg

And also, big thanks to the whole community for everything you do for esports. Every stream, every comment and everytime you watch a stream it all makes a difference and it all makes me happy. @MaddeLisk
